CHAPTER ELEVEN

Charlie rushed into the station, his thoughts a whirlpool churning through the events of the last two days. A shadow clung to him, uneasiness creating a knot between his shoulders.

How is it that I ran into a woman who knows the victim in my latest homicide case?

Their paths crossing had to be a coincidence, as Mr. Lim’s body had not yet been discovered when he met her, and Rochelle couldn’t have known Charlie regularly ran along the water.

I assumed her husband gave her the bruise on her cheek, but what if it was Mr. Lim? Could he have attacked her, and she fought back?

If she has a spray tan, there would be physical evidence. Circumstantial evidence, but evidence nonetheless.

Kelly walked to him, meeting him in the middle. “Did you stop for a mani and pedi? Is that why it took you so damn long to get here?”

“Don’t start. I drove as fast as I legally could,” Charlie replied.

“You drive slower than my grandmother.”

He had no energy to argue. When this case is solved, I’m asking for a new partner.

He trailed behind as Kelly pushed open the conference room door. They took seats across the table from Mrs. Lim and a bald, elderly man. The older man held a felt hat that his bent fingers twisted back and forth. Mrs. Lim clutched a wad of white tissues, muttering in Chinese. The man beside her nodded every few words.

“Mrs. Lim, how are you?” Charlie asked.

“Okay.” She combed her fingers through her hair. “I apologize for my appearance. I couldn’t sleep.”

He wished he could offer words of comfort. “That’s understandable.”

“Our sergeant said there was something you wanted to talk to us about,” Kelly said.

She looked to the elderly man, who swung his hat forward as if to encourage her. “There were a few things I wasn’t forthcoming about,” she said.

Did she have something to do with the murder?

If so, I was really wrong about her.

Charlie caught himself. He was making assumptions based on opinion and not facts. It was lazy detective work, and he knew better. Just listen.

“Do you mind if I take notes, Mrs. Lim?” Kelly asked.

“That’s fine.” She pushed her wedding rings around her finger. They were loose. She’d lost weight since they were originally sized. “Where should I start?”

Charlie looked to Kelly. “At the beginning?”

Kelly nodded in agreement.

Mrs. Lim rocked back and forth in the chair. “It started after our youngest was born. I wasn’t myself.”

“What do you mean?” Kelly asked.

“I couldn’t get out of bed after the baby was born. I was so tired all the time. Cary hired someone to help me during the day. When he came home, he took care of the kids while I went to bed.”

Postpartum depression is a real thing. It nearly crippled my older sister.

“Raising kids is hard,” Kelly said.

If it would have done some good, Charlie would have kicked him under the table. But he probably didn’t even realize he was an insensitive asshole. “Mrs. Lim, my sister, struggled after her son was born.
